Elden Ring Crossplay: What You Can and Can’t Do in 2025
Elden Ring is an absolute juggernaut in the RPG world. With its open-world design, intense boss battles, and deeply rewarding exploration, it’s no surprise that millions of players are still roaming the Lands Between years after launch. But one question keeps coming up, especially among friends looking to team up: Does Elden Ring support crossplay?
Here’s everything you need to know about Elden Ring’s crossplay status, and what’s on the horizon with its upcoming multiplayer title, Elden Ring: Nightreign.
|Is Elden Ring Crossplay?
Short answer: No, Elden Ring does not currently support crossplay between platforms.
If you’re playing on PC, you won’t be able to join friends on PlayStation or Xbox. FromSoftware’s online system is platform-specific, which means multiplayer (both co-op and PvP) is restricted within each ecosystem.
But here’s a silver lining: cross-generation multiplayer is supported. That means:
PS4 and PS5 players can play together
Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S players can also connect
So if you’re upgrading your console but your friends are still on last-gen, you can still summon each other, invade, or duel without an issue, as long as you’re in the same console family.
|Why No Crossplay?
FromSoftware hasn’t given a detailed explanation, but there are a few likely reasons:
Technical hurdles – Seamless cross-platform integration can be challenging, especially with a complex multiplayer system like Elden Ring’s, which uses summoning signs, phantoms, and invasions.
Platform policies – Sony, Microsoft, and Steam all have different online policies and systems that might complicate matchmaking across platforms.
Security and balance – PC players may use mods or tools that aren’t allowed on consoles, which could break the balance or introduce cheating into crossplay environments.
So while the community would love to see it, FromSoftware has stayed consistent in keeping things platform-specific, and that isn’t changing anytime soon.

|What About Nightreign? Any Crossplay There?
In 2025, FromSoftware is expanding the Elden Ring universe with a new game: Elden Ring: Nightreign. This isn’t a traditional sequel, it’s more of a multiplayer-focused survival experience set in the same lore-rich world.
And naturally, fans were curious: will Nightreign support crossplay?
Unfortunately, no, Nightreign will also not include crossplay, according to the game’s director, Junya Ishizaki. Much like the original game, players will be limited to multiplayer interactions within the same platform family.
The good news is that cross-generation play will still be supported, just like in Elden Ring. So PS5 and PS4 players can still play together, as can Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One players.

If you’re eager to see what Nightreign is all about, keep an eye on the beta test through their website. Here’s what we know:
Platforms: PS5 and Xbox Series X|S (no word yet on a PC beta)
Gameplay focus: Co-op survival mechanics in an expanded version of the Lands Between
While it won’t feature crossplay, it does look like the game will deliver a new multiplayer experience with a darker, more chaotic twist, definitely something for Elden Ring fans to look forward to.
|Can We Expect Crossplay in the Future?
As of now, there’s no indication that crossplay will be patched into either Elden Ring or Nightreign. FromSoftware hasn’t made any promises or teased future updates in that direction.
That said, the demand is loud and clear, the community has been asking for it for years. If FromSoftware ever revisits the idea or builds a new IP from the ground up, there’s always a chance it could finally make the leap to full cross-platform support.
While it’s a bit disappointing that Elden Ring doesn’t support crossplay, there are still solid multiplayer options available within the same platform family. Summoning friends, battling invaders, or joining covenants is all still possible, you just need to be on the same system.
And with Elden Ring: Nightreign on the way, the world of the Lands Between is far from done evolving. Even without crossplay, there’s a lot to look forward to for fans of online action, dark fantasy, and punishing-but-rewarding gameplay.
