Is Insurgency Sandstorm Crossplay?

As someone who’s spent countless hours getting wrecked in Insurgency: Sandstorm, I know how frustrating it can be when your friends are on a different platform. You just want to team up and clear out objectives together, but it begs the question, is Insurgency Sandstorm crossplay or are we all stuck in separate matchmaking worlds?

Insurgency sandstorm throws you straight into the chaos. It’s a hardcore, team-based tactical FPS that focuses on realism, intense gunfights, and smart strategy. Unlike other games where you can run and gun with ease, Sandstorm makes you slow down, communicate, and actually plan your moves.

I’ve lost count of how many times a single shot changed everything in a match. It’s tough, gritty, and super satisfying if you’re into a more grounded kind of multiplayer experience.

|Is Insurgency Sandstorm Cross Platform?

Yes, but only partially. If you’re on PS4 and PS5, you can play together. The same goes for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S players. But here’s the catch: crossplay between PlayStation and Xbox, or either of them with PC, isn’t available.

So if your friends are all on Xbox and you’re rocking a PS5, unfortunately, you’re stuck playing separately for now. And PC players? You’re in your own matchmaking pool too.

|Why No Full Crossplay?

The devs at New World Interactive have acknowledged the demand for crossplay across all platforms. But because of differences in controls, performance, and how each platform handles online infrastructure, fully unifying matchmaking isn’t as simple as flipping a switch.

There’s also the balance issue, PC players with mouse and keyboard versus console players using a controller can create some unfair matchups. Still, the community has been pretty vocal, so fingers crossed we’ll see broader support in a future update.

Insurgency: Sandstorm – Operation: Overrun is a major free update released on April 22, 2025. It adds the new Forest map, two powerful light machine guns (M250 and H21), and a limited-time mode called “First Blood” focused on LMG-only combat. The update also brings premium cosmetic DLCs and is available on all platforms, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

|Multiplayer Is Still a Blast

Even without full crossplay, multiplayer in Sandstorm is where the game shines. You can squad up in co-op or dive into intense PVP modes like Push, Domination, and Firefight. The gunplay feels heavy, the tension is real, and communication actually matters. Whether you’re playing with friends or strangers, every match feels like a mini warzone.

|There’s No Official Roadmap, Yet

There’s no official roadmap for full cross platform play yet. That said, the game has continued to evolve with regular content updates, and the devs haven’t ruled it out. It may not be a “when,” but it’s definitely still an “if” worth hoping for.

So, is Insurgency: Sandstorm crossplay? Sort of. You can play within your console family, but not across all platforms.

Still, if you love tactical shooters and high-stakes teamwork, it’s worth playing regardless of where you are. I’ve had some of the most intense multiplayer moments in this game—and whether you’re on console or PC, it delivers.
