Is The Forest Crossplay?
The Forest is way more fun when you’re trying to survive the cannibal infested wilderness with a group of friends. Whether you’re building a base, scavenging for supplies, or screaming as something jumps out at you in the dark, co-op is where the game really shines. But what if your friends are playing on a different system than you? Is The Forest Crossplay?
Here’s the current situation with crossplay in The Forest, as of 2025.
|Is The Forest Crossplay?
No, it’s not. The Forest doesn’t support crossplay. If you’re on PC and your friend is on PlayStation, there’s no way to join the same game. You’ll need to be on the same platform if you want to play together.
This might be disappointing, especially since a lot of modern games are making crossplay the norm. But The Forest just never made that leap.
While players have long requested this feature, especially as online gaming becomes more interconnected, Endnight Games has never announced plans to add it. The original game’s engine and network architecture were likely not built with crossplay in mind, and overhauling that now would take significant development time. As of now, there’s no indication that crossplay will ever be added retroactively.

|What Platforms Is It On?
Right now, The Forest is available on:
PlayStation 5 (via backward compatibility)
There’s no version for Xbox or Nintendo Switch, which already limits the crossplay possibilities. And since the game was originally released back in 2018—and its sequel, Sons of the Forest, is already out—it’s unlikely that new platforms will be added at this point.
If you’re new to the game, it’s worth noting that both the PC and PlayStation versions perform well and are still supported, but they are totally separate ecosystems. So plan accordingly when choosing your platform.
|Can I Transfer My Progress?
Unfortunately, The Forest doesn’t support cross progression either. So if you’ve been grinding away on PlayStation and decide to switch to PC, you’ll have to start from scratch. Your saves don’t carry over between platforms.
For many survival games, cross-progression is often linked to crossplay, since both features rely on cloud-based accounts and save syncing. Since The Forest doesn’t support either, players should commit to one platform for the full experience.
|Any Crossplay Friendly Alternatives?
If you really want a survival game that lets you play with friends no matter the platform, here are a few you might like:
Minecraft
No Man’s Sky
ARK: Survival Evolved – A bit clunky at times, but does offer some crossplay depending on where you play.
Other titles like Grounded, Rust: Console Edition, and V Rising are also gaining attention for their co-op survival gameplay. Just make sure to double-check each game’s crossplay status before diving in.
The Forest is still a great survival experience, especially with friends, but only if everyone’s playing on the same system. Crossplay just isn’t part of the package in 2025, and it likely never will be. If you’re set on surviving the horrors of the forest together, plan ahead and make sure your group is on the same platform. Or, check out a different game that does support crossplay and dive into the adventure from there.
