It’s weird, it’s moody, and it’s got this eerie Southern gothic vibe that immediately pulls you in. South of Midnight is set in a reimagined version of the American Deep South, where folklore and reality blur together. You play as Hazel, a young woman who discovers she’s a “Weaver” — someone with the power to fix and reshape the broken pieces of the world using a kind of reality-bending magic.

We say this a lot, but South of Midnight genuinely looks different. The animation style is almost stop-motion, with jittery, slightly exaggerated movement that makes everything feel just a bit off, in a good way. The art direction is stylized, almost painterly, with heavy use of shadow, color, and texture.

It’s the kind of game where you pause just to take in the scenery, whether it’s a swamp lit by fireflies or a crumbling southern estate draped in moss. The atmosphere carries a lot of the weight, and it looks like the team at Compulsion Games knows that.

|Is It Coming to PS5?

Short answer: nope.

South of Midnight is currently confirmed for Xbox Series X|S and PC. It’s also launching day one on Game Pass, which is great if you’re already in that ecosystem. But for PS5 players, there’s no version and no word of it coming anytime soon.

That said, Xbox has started easing up on its exclusivity lately. Some first-party titles have been showing up on PlayStation (like Hi-Fi Rush), so while nothing’s confirmed, it’s not impossible. Just don’t expect it at launch.

We’re always talking about how games are starting to feel the same. South of Midnight might not be for everyone, it’s slower, more atmospheric, and less combat-heavy than what some players are used to — but that’s kind of the point. It’s trying something different.
