Starcraft 3: What We Know So Far

If you’ve been waiting forever for a new StarCraft game, it looks like there’s finally some good news. Recent reports are pointing toward a new StarCraft project being developed, and this time, Blizzard isn’t doing it alone. South Korean publisher Nexon, the studio behind games like The First Descendant and Dave the Diver, is reportedly teaming up with Blizzard after winning a bidding war for StarCraft 3.

Earlier this year, a report from Asia Today revealed that Blizzard was looking for a partner to help bring StarCraft back to life, and companies like Nexon, Netmarble, Krafton, and NCSoft all wanted in. Now, according to a fresh report from MTN, Nexon has secured the deal and is officially working with Blizzard on new content within the StarCraft universe.

|What kind of game will StarCraft 3 be?

That’s the big question, and right now, it’s still a mystery. Some reports suggest that when companies bid for StarCraft, there were no strict rules about what kind of game they had to make.

So while most people are hoping for a classic real-time strategy (RTS) sequel like StarCraft II, it’s possible we could see something totally new. Maybe an RTS, maybe a spin-off, maybe even a hybrid genre. Blizzard hasn’t confirmed anything yet.

Still, with how iconic StarCraft is as an RTS, it feels pretty safe to expect at least some return to those roots, especially after almost a decade without a brand-new entry. (StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void launched back in 2015!)

|When could StarCraft 3 release?

If you’re hoping to play StarCraft 3 soon, you might want to be patient. Right now, it seems like the project is still early in development. Blizzard is also busy with big titles like Diablo 4, World of Warcraft expansions, and keeping Overwatch 2 afloat.

Analysts are predicting we might not see StarCraft 3 until sometime between 2025 and 2027, based on Blizzard’s usual development timelines.

Even though Blizzard hasn’t officially announced StarCraft 3 yet, the signs are definitely there. Between the Nexon partnership, industry leaks, and a decade of fans asking for it, it finally feels like the franchise is waking back up.

It’s been a long wait, but if Blizzard and Nexon get this right, StarCraft 3 could be an incredible new chapter for one of the greatest sci-fi universes in gaming history.

Stay tuned, the Koprulu sector might be calling us back sooner than we think.
