State of Decay 3: Everything We Know So Far

It’s been a while since State of Decay 2 dropped, and fans have been waiting for the next chapter. Well, good news, State of Decay 3 is officially in the works, and it’s looking like the most ambitious game in the series yet.

Here’s everything we know so far about the upcoming survival-horror title from Undead Labs, and why it might just be worth the wait.

|The World Is Colder. Wilder. And More Dangerous.

From what we’ve seen in the teaser trailer, State of Decay 3 is taking a darker turn, literally. The trailer shows a lone survivor trekking through a snowy, desolate forest before spotting a terrifying infected deer. Yup, the zombies aren’t just human anymore.

The game appears to be set in a post-apocalyptic wilderness where nature is taking back the land. That means new survival challenges: freezing weather, infected animals, and a more hostile world overall. It’s not just about avoiding zombies anymore, the environment itself is out to get you.

|Bigger, Better, and More Brutal Gameplay

Undead Labs is working on making the core gameplay deeper and more polished. If you loved building communities and making tough calls in State of Decay 2, get ready for even more depth.

They’re expanding the base-building system, refining resource management, and giving survivor stories more emotional weight. Your choices will have real consequences, and yes, permadeath is still a thing. Lose a survivor, and they’re gone for good.

Combat is also getting an overhaul, with more strategic and visceral encounters. Expect better animations, smarter enemies, and a satisfying sense of impact in every fight. Dismemberment is in, too, so, yeah, it’s going to get gory.

|Now Powered by Unreal Engine 5

One of the biggest upgrades? State of Decay 3 is being built in Unreal Engine 5. That means we’re getting next-gen visuals, more immersive lighting, and a world that feels alive, and terrifying.

Dynamic weather, realistic lighting, and high detail environments are all part of the package. The visuals in the trailer already look stunning, and this engine switch could seriously elevate the whole experience.

|Co-Op Is Getting a Major Boost

The devs are also putting a lot of focus on making co-op more meaningful. Instead of just dropping into a friend’s game and leaving without any impact, State of Decay 3 will reportedly support shared, persistent worlds. That means if you and your friends build a base and make progress together, it sticks, no matter who’s hosting.

It’s a smart move and something fans have been asking for since the beginning.

|When’s It Coming Out?

There’s no official release date yet, but we know State of Decay 3 will launch on Xbox Series X|S and PC, and it’ll be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one.

Undead Labs has wrapped up support for State of Decay 2, which suggests the team is now fully focused on finishing the third game. Fingers crossed we get a release window (or even a full gameplay trailer) sometime soon.

State of Decay 3 is shaping up to be a bold leap forward for the franchise. The game feels more intense, and aims to deliver a survival experience that’s as emotionally gripping as it is brutal. Whether you’re in it for the community building, the undead slaying action, or just the thrill of surviving in a cruel world, this one’s going to be worth watching.

Stay tuned, survivors. This might just be the State of Decay we’ve all been waiting for.
