Undertale 2, Is It Really Happening?

When Undertale first launched in 2015, it didn’t just become a hit, it became a phenomenon. Created by solo developer Toby Fox, the game charmed players with its quirky characters, emotional storytelling, and the bold idea that violence wasn’t the only way forward. In the years since, fans have clung to one burning question: Will there ever be an Undertale 2?

|Is Undertale 2 Actually Happening?

The short answer? No, not in the way you might expect. Toby Fox has made it clear that he doesn’t plan to make a direct sequel to Undertale. The story was meant to stand on its own. Depending on the choices players made, whether they spared everyone, destroyed everything, or fell somewhere in between, Undertale offered several different endings. Each one felt like a definitive conclusion.

Fox has said before that making a sequel would undercut the finality and impact of the first game. The charm of Undertale lies in how personal it feels to each player. A sequel might disrupt that magic.

|So What’s Deltarune?

Even though a direct sequel isn’t in the cards, Toby Fox isn’t done making games. In 2018, he released Deltarune: Chapter 1, followed by Chapter 2 in 2021. While it might look and feel like Undertale, complete with some familiar faces, Fox has confirmed that Deltarune takes place in a different universe.

The name Deltarune is even an anagram of Undertale, which fans have pointed out countless times. But this isn’t just clever wordplay. It’s a subtle way of saying: this game is connected, but not a continuation.

In Deltarune, your choices don’t seem to carry the same weight they did in Undertale. The game explores new themes, new characters, and a different approach to storytelling, while still keeping that signature Toby Fox charm and humor.

To date, there is no official Undertale 2 in development. Anything you see online with that name is either fan-made or entirely made up.

The good news is that Deltarune is very real, and more is on the way. Toby Fox has confirmed that Deltarune will eventually have seven chapters, and he’s actively working on the next installments.
