WB Shuts Down Monolith Productions, Cancels Wonder Woman
Warner Bros. Discovery has announced a major restructuring of its gaming division, resulting in the closure of three development studios: Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and WB Games San Diego. Alongside these closures, the highly anticipated “Wonder Woman” game, developed by Monolith Productions, has been officially canceled.
The End of Monolith Productions and Wonder Woman
Monolith Productions, known for acclaimed titles like Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and its sequel Shadow of War, had been working on Wonder Woman since its announcement in 2021. However, the project encountered numerous difficulties, including a complete reboot in 2024 after accumulating over $100 million in development costs. Despite the investment, the game remained far from completion, ultimately leading to its cancellation.
Shuttering of Player First Games and WB Games San Diego
In addition to Monolith, Player First Games—the studio behind the crossover fighting game MultiVersus—and WB Games San Diego, which was developing a new AAA free-to-play, cross-platform title, are also being shut down. These decisions follow a period of financial struggles for Warner Bros. Games, including a reported $300 million loss in the previous year.
Warner Bros. Refocuses on Key Franchises
According to JB Perrette, CEO and President of Global Streaming and Games for Warner Bros. Discovery, the company will now prioritize four core franchises:
Harry Potter/Hogwarts Legacy.
Mortal Kombat.
DC (with a primary focus on Batman)
Game of Thrones.
This strategic shift is intended to streamline operations and allocate resources toward the company’s most successful and profitable intellectual properties.
Broader Implications for the Gaming Industry
The closure of these studios and the cancellation of Wonder Woman highlight ongoing challenges in the video game industry, as companies grapple with financial pressures and evolving market dynamics. Warner Bros. Discovery’s decision reflects a focus on ensuring long-term profitability by concentrating on established, high-performing franchises.
As the industry continues to adapt to these shifting priorities, the impact of these closures on developers and future game projects remains to be seen.
