When I first saw golden cards in Clash Royale, I thought I was missing something huge, like maybe these players had unlocked secret upgrades or stronger versions of normal cards. Turns out, I was half right. The cards did look fancier, but not in a “pay to win” kind of way. What I was actually seeing were Star Levels, purely cosmetic upgrades that make your cards look cooler, not stronger. But you know what? That’s not a bad thing. I’ve actually come to love unlocking Star Levels just because it adds a little bit of flash to my battles. Seeing my Knight with golden armor or my Goblins leave a trail of sparks just feels satisfying.

|How to Unlock Star Levels (and What They Cost)

You won’t get access to Star Levels right away. You need to reach King Level 6 first, which happens pretty early on if you’re playing regularly. After that, you’ll need two things:

  1. Star Points

  2. A card that’s upgraded to the required level

Here’s how the system breaks down:

  • Star Level 1: Card must be Level 7 → Costs 5,000 Star Points

  • Star Level 2: Card must be Level 10 → Costs 10,000 Star Points

  • Star Level 3: Card must be Level 13 → Costs 20,000 Star Points

I started with my Skeleton Army because I use it all the time, and watching them swarm with gold effects was oddly satisfying. No gameplay advantage, but it made my deck feel more “mine.”

|Earning Star Points: No Extra Effort Needed

You earn Star Points just by playing. You get them from:

  • Upgrading your cards

  • Donating cards to clanmates

  • Collecting cards for troops that are already maxed out

  • Buying maxed cards in the shop (they convert to Star Points)

I didn’t even realize I had a stash of Star Points until I checked one day. If you’re active in a clan and donate often, they really add up.

|Is It Worth Spending Star Points?

If you’re still early in the game or trying to max out your deck, I’d say hold off. Spend your gold on upgrades first, actual levels will help you win more matches. But once your core deck is in a good spot, unlocking Star Levels is a fun little bonus. There’s nothing wrong with flexing some style if you’ve put the time in.

Star Levels don’t change how you play Clash Royale, but they definitely change how it feels. It’s like polishing your favorite sneakers or putting a cool case on your phone. They make your favorite cards feel more personal.

I wouldn’t say they’re a “must-have,” but once you’re deep into the game, they’re a fun reward for all the time you’ve spent leveling up. And hey, if I’m gonna lose a close match, I’d at least like to lose while throwing golden arrows, right?
