When will GTA 6 come out?
When will GTA 6 come out? After years of anticipation, speculation, and countless leaks, Rockstar Games has finally confirmed the release date for Grand Theft Auto VI. And while many fans were hoping for a 2025 launch, there’s some disappointing news, GTA 6 will now release on Tuesday, May 26, 2026.
The delay was announced by Rockstar in an official statement, where the studio acknowledged fan excitement while asking for a bit more patience.
“We are very sorry that this is later than expected,” the team wrote. “The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto 6 is no exception.”
|Why the Delay?
With the success of GTA 5 still strong over a decade later, the expectations for GTA 6 are sky high. Players are eager to explore the new city, characters, and next gen gameplay features. Originally slated for a 2025 release, GTA 6’s development is clearly ambitious, and Rockstar isn’t rushing things.
Given their history with massive, genre defining games like GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, it’s not a surprise that they’re taking the time to ensure everything is just right. Fans may be disappointed, but a polished game is always better than a rushed one.

|What’s GTA 6 All About?
From what I know so far, Grand Theft Auto VI will take place in the fictional state of Leonida, a setting heavily inspired by Florida. The centerpiece of this new map is Vice City, Rockstar’s take on Miami, making a return with more detail, vibrancy, and chaos than ever before.
The game also introduces two main protagonists, one of whom is Lucia, the first female lead in the history of the GTA series. Rockstar appears to be leaning into a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde vibe, promising a deeper story, more character driven missions, and (likely) a lot of heist based gameplay.
|Platforms and Launch Details
As expected, GTA 6 will launch first on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. There’s no word yet on a PC release, which mirrors Rockstar’s typical rollout strategy. If history repeats itself, PC gamers may have to wait up to a year after the initial launch.
Older consoles like PS4 and Xbox One won’t be getting the game, which makes sense given the scale and technical demands of GTA 6.
The wait is longer than most of us would’ve liked, but if anyone can justify a delay, it’s Rockstar. The scope, polish, and storytelling of their past games have set the bar sky high, and they’re clearly aiming to raise it even further.
So mark your calendars for May 26, 2026, and in the meantime, there’s still plenty of chaos to enjoy in GTA Online or revisit the streets of Los Santos one more time before heading to the sunny shores of Leonida.
